If you've ever strolled through Lions Park in Port Coquitlam, you've likely noticed the large mural near the picnic shelter — a colorful and heartfelt tribute to community spirit and local history. But did you know that this park, a favorite spot for families and nature lovers, exists because of the Port Coquitlam Lions Club?

A Gift From the Community — For the Community

The Port Coquitlam Lions Club was formed in 1949, part of the global Lions Clubs International organization known for its mission of community service. In the early 1950s, the local club proposed the idea of creating a new park and took the lead in making it a reality. From breaking ground to building amenities like the picnic shelter, the Lions Club put in the work and left a lasting legacy for generations of PoCo residents.

The Mural: A Tribute to Their Efforts

On August 26, 1998, a mural was unveiled in the park to commemorate the Lions Club’s dedication. Painted by Tammy Pilon, a Port Coquitlam artist, and brought to life with the help of local volunteers, the mural depicts the original construction of the park. It stands as a symbol of what community collaboration can achieve.

The mural also honors Wes Henders and Jack Silvius, two Lions Club members who played an important role in the park's development and are remembered for their service and dedication.

More Than Just a Park

Lions Park today is a peaceful, family-friendly space filled with nature, laughter, and community. It features a playground, splash park, public art, and is connected to the Traboulay PoCo Trail that winds along the Coquitlam River. It's a spot many locals hold dear — and it all started with a vision from a small group of community-minded individuals.

So next time you're at Lions Park, take a moment to check out the mural and the plaque beneath it. It's more than just a piece of art — it’s a story of pride, purpose, and the power of giving back.
