Car Free Day 2026 brought pedestrians, vendors and community activities to the streets of Downtown Port Coquitlam.

Downtown Port Coquitlam welcomed the community into the streets on Saturday, August 29, as Car Free Day 2026 returned with live entertainment, local vendors, family activities, food and plenty to explore throughout the downtown core.

With regular vehicle traffic removed from parts of the event area, McAllister Avenue and the surrounding streets became places for people to walk, gather and spend the day together.

Presented by TransLink, the fourth annual Car Free Day brought another full afternoon of activity to Downtown PoCo, with entertainment and attractions extending from McAllister Avenue into Leigh Square.

Downtown Port Coquitlam Becomes a Community Gathering Place

One of the most recognizable sights of Car Free Day was the large blue arch welcoming visitors into the event.

Beyond it, McAllister Avenue was filled with people moving between vendors, food options, seating areas, community displays and entertainment.

Instead of simply travelling through downtown, visitors had the opportunity to slow down, walk through the streets and experience the area from a different perspective.

Car Free Day showed how familiar downtown spaces can change when they become places for people rather than regular vehicle traffic.

Live Music Brings Energy to McAllister Avenue

Live performances continued throughout Car Free Day on the Main Stage along McAllister Avenue.

Live entertainment was a major part of Car Free Day 2026, with performances taking place on the Main Stage throughout the afternoon and into the evening.

People gathered in front of the stage to watch the performances, while others stopped to listen as they made their way through the festival.

The live music added another layer to the atmosphere downtown and gave visitors a reason to stay, explore, and enjoy the event at their own pace.

Families Gather at Leigh Square

Leigh Square became another busy part of Car Free Day, with entertainment and activities geared toward children and families.

The Family Stage featured a variety of performances throughout the afternoon, drawing crowds around the square while children and families gathered close to the action.

The open space around Leigh Square also gave visitors another place to sit, walk around, and take part in the celebration away from the Main Stage.

Later in the evening, the Leigh Square fountains added another element to the day, continuing a familiar summertime tradition in Downtown Port Coquitlam.

Walking and Cycling Were Part of the Experience

A free bike valet gave visitors arriving by bicycle a place to leave their bikes while exploring Car Free Day.

Car Free Day was also about encouraging different ways of getting around the community.

Visitors were encouraged to walk, cycle, or take transit to the event, and a free bike valet was available near McAllister Avenue and Donald Street.

Cyclists could leave their bikes at the staffed area while exploring the event on foot, making it easier to take part without bringing a vehicle downtown.

The bike valet fit naturally with the purpose of Car Free Day and gave residents another practical way to experience the event.

Local Vendors and Community Organizations Take Part

Community booths, vendors and displays were part of the Car Free Day festival area in Downtown Port Coquitlam.

Throughout the festival area, local businesses, community organizations, artists and other groups had the opportunity to connect directly with residents.

Booths and tents were set up across the downtown event area, giving visitors plenty to discover between the stages and other activities.

Food vendors were also part of the day, adding to the festival atmosphere and giving people another reason to stay downtown for several hours.

For many organizations and businesses, events like Car Free Day provide an opportunity to meet the community face-to-face in a relaxed and welcoming environment.

More Than Just a Day Without Cars

Car Free Day is about more than simply closing a street to vehicles.

For one day, parts of Downtown Port Coquitlam became places to gather, listen to music, discover local organizations, enjoy food and spend time with neighbours, friends and family.

Some visitors came for the performances. Others explored the vendors, brought their children to Leigh Square, arrived by bicycle or simply walked through downtown to see what was happening.

Together, those different experiences created a community event that felt connected across the downtown core.
