On Saturday, September 7, downtown Port Coquitlam turned into a lively, pedestrian-friendly playground as the city celebrated Car Free Day 2024! Hosted along McAllister Avenue, this free event brought out families, friends, and curious newcomers for a full day of fun, local love, and sustainable vibes.
🎶 Local Vibes + Big Smiles
Live music filled the air from two main stages featuring everything from upbeat local bands to cool acoustic sets. People danced in the street, lounged with friends, and enjoyed performances from artists like Michaela Slinger and The Coyotes, giving the day a real festival feel right in the heart of PoCo.
🛍️ Local Business Love
Over 100 vendors lined the avenue, showcasing everything from handmade goods and art to community services and local food. It was an awesome reminder of how much talent and heart live right here in our own city.
🧒👟 Family Fun for Everyone
This wasn’t just an event for grown-ups. Kids had a blast with mini golf, a ninja obstacle course, face painting, and more. There were plenty of smiles and high-fives, and even a dedicated bike skills zone for young riders to test out their moves.
🚲 A Day Without Cars – And It Worked!
The best part? No cars in sight. With McAllister Ave closed off, people strolled freely, bikes cruised by, and strollers rolled smoothly. It was a perfect reminder that we can enjoy our city in ways that are good for the planet and the community.
Thanks to TransLink, it was easy to get there without driving. Multiple transit lines led directly to the event, and kids 12 and under even rode for free. A bike valet was also on site for anyone cycling in — now that’s how you do sustainable!

🌍 Why It Matters
Car Free Day isn’t just about having a good time (though it definitely was). It’s about reimagining our streets, building community, and showing how accessible and enjoyable our city can be when we make space for people instead of cars.
